BEACHES AND FILM

Arisaig is surrounded by some of the most spectacular beaches to be found in the UK. Rhu Beach which is a short walk from Arisaig (the walk takes you a long a track and across fields) and is a good beach to spot wildlife, whilst enjoying the scenery. White sandy beaches at Traig, near Arisaig, is a beach with sheltered bays, silvery sand and good views to the Small Isles. It is a good beach for swimming, kayaking, beachcombing, rockpooling, wildlife spotting and picnicking.

The Silver Sands of Morar are a string of white sandy beaches on the banks of the River Moidart as it enters the Sound of Arisaig. It is best explored at low tide and extends for a mile to the north with mature coastal heath vegetation behind.

The area has provided settings for many films: Local Hero; Rob Roy; Breaking the Waves; Harry Potter and Highlander.

The Jacobite Steam train that travels from Fort William to Mallaig that was used as Hogwarts Express in the films stops at Arisaig station. It is worth going to Fort William to do the journey on the steam train to Mallaig has it goes over the Glenfinnan Viaduct that is shown in the films and you can also see the views of the Loch Shiel which is another key location in the films.
